The goal of this course is to introduce you to Positive Psychology and to the basic principles that govern this field. The science of Positive Psychology studies the development and promotion of the wellbeing of the individual and the social environment, investigating how we can build mental strengths, such as resilience and meaning in life. It has a long history which extends from ancient Greek philosophy to humanism and certain domains of mental health. As a scientific branch, it was officially established in 1998 by the American psychologist Martin Seligman.
The benefits that derive from the application of Positive Psychology in our daily lives are innumerable, including decreased anxiety, stress and depressive symptoms, and increased levels of wellbeing, happiness and quality of life. The course mentions the two main Positive Psychology theories, which entail the 3 happy lives and the PERMA(H) model. The latter is further examined by analyzing the six elements that constitute this acronym, which stand for Positive emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, Accomplishment and Health. Moreover, the course explores the connection of the PERMA(H) model to the 24 VIA character strengths i.e., a collection of positive individual character traits that all humans possess and are linked to personal development, wellbeing and life satisfaction.
Finally, you will be presented with five Positive Psychology examples or five useful and impactful ways to apply Positive Psychology in your personal life. These consist of the gratitude journal, the gratitude visit (or letter), the best possible self, the daily strength awareness and the practice of mindfulness meditation.
